The higher the filling power (FP), the more air – and therefore the more heat – an ounce below can catch. A high number also suggests that the bag will be lighter – because less down is necessary to keep the user warm. It will also be more expensive because the descent is of the highest quality. Sleep bags usually have a filling power of between 500 and 900. Down Isolation Water Resistant or Hydrophobic is common and promises to isolate in wet conditions, or at least dry faster than without being treated (with arms fallen together and cannot be lost, losing their isolate capacity). Everything down is understandable and light, with goose down being of greater quality than duck down. The cheapest bags will also use feathers in your isolation. The proportion of feathers to the low is expressed as a percentage, for example: 90/10 goose down, with the least number representing the percentage of insulation that is feathers. HoodMulti-baffled, anatomically shaped hoods lock the head and combine with neck baffles to minimize heat loss. The cheapest models are placed flat but still have lock closure to improve warmth. Synthetic insulation Made with man-made fiber sheets, these bags are cheaper and durable than the bags deployed, and can isolate users even when wet. They tend to be more bulky and less comprehensible than the bags below. ShapeMummy-shaped bags have a smaller volume and are the warmest. They stick to the foot and may feel restrictive. Rectangular bags are more spacious and can be opened as a blanket in warmer nights. A trapezoid or '3D' footbox allows feet to rest in a natural vertical position. The anatomical forms are lighter and more compact when they are packed. ZipsThe length zippers of the fourth reduce heat loss and weight. The two-way zippers that run the length of the bag – or combine with a zipper to the foot – allow more ventilation options in hotter nights. Baffles These are designed to contain over key areas of the body, maximizing the loft and minimizing air movement across the seams. StorageThe sleeping bags should be hung or kept in your storage bag in a dry and well ventilated space outside the direct sunlight. Fabrics The shell tissue is usually a nylon or corrugated polyester and will have a DWR coating to repel the water. Some bags use a completely waterproof fabric that will be more durable than those with DWR. The next relative lining is usually a soft-tit nylon or polyester. The coatings help reduce clams by handling body oils and moisture. Tubes brought The pipes will be filled with insulation and will sit behind zippers to prevent the air from coming in and out of the bag. Down Rules Responsible Most of the sleeping bag manufacturers adhere to the Responsible Down Standard (RDS) administered by the Non-profit Textile Bag. The standard guarantees: Temperature rating Choose a bag that best suits most of the trips you will make (or get multiple bags). You can always increase the temperature of your bag using a sleeping bag lining or using an isolated jacket. Most of the bags of this feature are tested to the EN13537 standard of European temperature ratings or the latest ISO 23537-1 standard (for bags sold outside of Europe). Because the insulation below does not catch the air effectively when it was compressed – as when you are lying on it – the bedspreads remove with the bottom side of the bag, but retain a standing box that usually extends to half-heat.
